  19. <p>     According to classic psychoanalytic theory, young women unconsciously
  20. seek husbands who bear profound similarities to their fathers.
  21. Assuming that is true, LISA MARIE PRESLEY has been looking for
  22. a rare mate indeed. A man like her father ELVIS PRESLEY would
  23. be a popular singer who possessed celebrity almost terrifying
  24. in its scope. He would dress each day as though he were paying
  25. sartorial homage to Liberace. He would fit the description of
  26. Elvis offered by a reviewer in 1956 who said the performer resembled
  27. "an obscene child." And where Elvis was "the King," this perfect
  28. man would be, say, "the King of Pop."
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     Despite formidable odds, Lisa Marie Presley has found such a
  31. partner. Last week she confirmed reports, which had been circulating
  32. in the press for weeks, that she secretly married MICHAEL JACKSON
  33. in the Dominican Republic in May. Calling herself Mrs. Presley-Jackson,
  34. she issued a statement proclaiming devotion to her husband.
  35. "We both look forward to raising a family and living a happy,
  36. healthy life together," she said, as if she were just another
  37. winsome bride embarking on a life of slate-patio, convection-oven
  38. normality.
  39. </p>
  40. <p>     The union is perhaps the most remarkable celebrity coupling
  41. in pop-culture history. Lisa Marie Presley is the daughter of
  42. the most successful recording artist of all time; her husband
  43. ranks not far behind. The names to the left and right of her
  44. fashionable hyphen translate into billions of dollars in record
  45. sales; together Lisa Marie and Michael are worth an estimated
  46. $300 million. As occupants of the highest echelon of America's
  47. show-biz class, they have behaved perfectly sensibly by marrying
  48. each other. And at the same time the marriage makes no sense.
  49. Michael Jackson, so disturbingly, aggressively childlike, was
  50. supposed to languish forever in his curious bachelorhood. He
  51. was not meant to say "I do."
  52. </p>
  53. <p>     Of course, the bride and groom may simply be madly in love,
  54. but the reason for the marriage has been the subject of considerable
  55. speculation. Michael, some say, hopes to salvage his image,
  56. sullied last year when a 13-year-old boy accused him of sexual
  57. abuse. Others theorize that Lisa Marie, whose effort to get
  58. a record contract failed two years ago, may have wed Michael
  59. in order to further her career as a singer. But certainly there
  60. are easier ways for the daughter of Elvis Presley to achieve
  61. that end than by becoming the wife of Michael Jackson. After
  62. all, Roger Clinton had a record deal, and he didn't marry Madonna
  63. to win it.

  65. <p>     Lisa Marie and her mother Priscilla are members of the Church
  66. of Scientology. Danny Keough, the man to whom Lisa Marie was
  67. until recently married and the father of her two children, is
  68. a prominent Scientologist. The church makes an effort to attract
  69. celebrities, but there is no indication that Michael has joined.
  70. </p>
  71. <p>     As Michael's wife, Lisa Marie will live in her accustomed manner.
  72. The new mistress of Neverland, the 2,700-acre ranch Michael
  73. has equipped with a Ferris wheel and zoo, spent her childhood
  74. at Graceland, her father's pleasure palace. Elvis gave his daughter
  75. a diamond ring and mink coat on her eighth birthday, and jetted
  76. her to Utah and back one afternoon so she could see snow. Michael
  77. will surely deny her nothing. Until last week, the newlyweds
  78. were staying in a $10,000-a-month apartment in Manhattan's Trump
  79. Tower.

  81. <p>     What does the future hold for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson? They are
  82. now in Budapest, where Michael is shooting a video. In October
  83. they will give a concert together at Graceland. There is even
  84. a rumor of a baby in the offing. May the godfather be Frank
  85. Sinatra.
